Start in Świbno – the beginning of the adventure on the Vistula River

It is best to start the trip in Świbno, where there is parking and a ferry crossing across the Vistula River.

At the beginning of the route, it’s worth visiting the Mewia Łacha nature reserve – a habitat for numerous bird species and seals. Here, you can cycle almost to the very mouth of the Vistula River on the Baltic Sea, walking along the Vistula Canal from 1895 – a monumental hydrotechnical investment that regulated the river’s course and significantly reduced the risk of flooding in the region.

The Świbno – Mikoszewo ferry runs from May 1st from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every 30 minutes (in situations where there are more drivers willing to travel, the ferry runs in shuttle mode, sailing non-stop to transport all those waiting)

Przegalina and Błotnik – hydrotechnics and sailing atmosphere

The section from Świbno through Przegalina to Kiezmark runs mainly along the crest of the Vistula flood embankment, which provides extensive views of the river delta.

Przegalina is home to an important waterway junction, including two locks and a river port. Worthy of note are the drawbridge and the historic lock from the late 19th century.

A little further on, in Błotnik, lies a marina – the perfect place for a short break and a nautical experience . A distinctive section of the EuroVelo 9 route, made of blue asphalt, also runs nearby. This section symbolizes the former Vistula River bed and is a national landmark.

Kiezmark – a historic church in Żuławy

In Kiezmark, it’s worth deviating from the route for a moment to see the Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa, dating from 1678. This wooden, single-nave church features a post-and-beam structure and is an excellent example of the characteristic architecture of the Żuławy region.

There are more such structures in the area – each one captivates with its simple form and use of natural materials. On the eastern side of the Vistula, there are sweeping views of the river and its floodplains, which are particularly impressive when the water level is high.

Gdańska Głowa – a historic lock and former fortress

Another important point of the route is the Gdańska Głowa lock – a unique 19th-century hydraulic engineering structure separating the Szkarpawa from the Vistula.

This place also has historical significance – in the 17th century, a fortress guarding access to Gdańsk stood here. Today, no traces of it remain, but the lock still serves its purpose and remains one of the most distinctive landmarks along the route.

Drewnica – a windmill and the Mennonite heritage

Drewnica is one of the most interesting villages in Żuławy from a cultural perspective. Many traditional wooden houses have been preserved here.

The biggest attraction is the post mill, built by the Mennonites in 1718. It is a unique monument and a symbol of the Żuławy region’s ancient landscape, recalling the history of settlement in the region.

Flood embankments and Mikoszewo – the finale of the route

The rest of the route runs along the crest of a flood embankment, distinguished by its width and height. This is one of the most scenic sections of the loop, offering panoramic views of the Vistula River valley, fields, and meadows.

In Mikoszewo there are shops, food outlets, and a station of the Żuławy Commuter Railway – a historic narrow-gauge railway running to destinations such as Jantar, Stegna, and Sztutowo.

Near the ferry crossing there is also a starting point for the Mewia Łacha reserve, where you can observe seal colonies – it is worth planning a longer stop here.

The Vistula Cycle Route is one of the longest cycling routes in Poland, running along the Vistula River from its source to the Baltic Sea. It connects diverse landscapes and regions, offering both recreational cycling and the possibility of longer, staged trips.
