Pomorskie hikes: Wejherowo Trail (hiking)

Do you dream of a hike in the bosom of nature but don't have time for long trips? We invite you to the Wejherowo Trail! The picturesque route, running along the edge of the Kashuby Lake District, offers unforgettable views, wildlife and cultural curiosities.

The Wejherowo Trail (red) is not just a tourist trail, but a real journey through diverse landscapes – from dense forests, through picturesque lakes, to charming villages. The route, with a total length of 55 km, leads almost entirely through the Tri-City Landscape Park.

Taking in sections, it will be an excellent introduction for all those who want to start an adventure with hiking. Walking in one day will be a good training for people preparing for long-distance hikes, and cross-country runners and marathon runners will test their fitness and endurance here. Regardless of whether you are an experienced hiker or just starting your adventure with hiking, the trail offers something for everyone.

The Wejherowo Trail – course, stages, interesting facts on the route

The trail officially starts in Sopot, right next to the SKM “Sopot Kamienny Potok” station and ends at the Wejherowo station, but it is two-way, so you choose your start and finish line yourself. In this article, we suggest reversing the route and starting from Wejherowo.

The route can be completed in one day (it takes about 15 hours of walking) or divided into two stages (this solution is suitable if you want to walk the trail with less experienced hikers or if you plan to walk it in winter).

Stage 1, Wejherowo – Marszewo Forest Botanical Garden (approx. 36 km)

The section is long but has a recreational character. It leads mostly along beaten forest roads and comfortable paths.

We start the march at the Wejherowo SKM station, and after a few moments we find ourselves on the edge of the City Park, named after Aleksander Majkowski, and then we delve into the Tri-City Landscape Park.

Less than 7 km from here is the small settlement of Mlynki, situated on the Cedron River. Right next to it, in a charming clearing, we will find water holes and tourist shelters with places to light a fire, ideal for the first stop.

The next kilometers will take us through the dense forests of the TPK. On the way, we will pass lakes located on the edge of the Kashuby Lake District: Wyspowo (popular among anglers), Borowo (the local bathing area is a good alternative to more popular beaches), Palsznik and the neighbouring Krypko and Wygoda Lakes – located in the Pelcznica Reserve, as well as Bieszkowice and Zawiat.

The next point on the route will be the small settlement of Piekielko – here our trail intertwines briefly with the Zagorska Struga Trail, and then turns towards Gdynia.

We finish this stage in the Forest Botanical Garden in Marszewo, a centre of the Gdansk Forest District combining two functions – a botanical garden and an education centre. The garden specializes in collections of forest plants, especially native ones and those related to the Pomorskie region.

As part of the year-round educational centre of the Gdansk Forest District, free classes on sustainable development are held here, aimed at groups of different ages – from preschoolers, through school students to seniors.

From here, we can continue walking or take a city bus to the Gdynia Chylonia SKM station.

Stage 2, Marszewo Forest Botanical Garden – Sopot Kamienny Potok (approx. 19 km)

The second stage begins in the Marszewo Forest Botanical Garden and leads through the Gdynia-Sopot part of the Tri-City Landscape Park. Although this section is shorter, it may be slightly more demanding in terms of fitness.

Forest paths wind up and down among moraine hills, so there are many short but demanding climbs ahead of us. The effort will be compensated by the natural circumstances – numerous ravines, streams and groves will make us not feel the approaching city at all.

On the route we will pass two nature reserves – a bit past Chwarzno, Kacze Legi, and then after passing through Karwiny, Leg over Swelina. From here we only have a few steps to the SKM Sopot Kamienny Potok station, where we end the trip.

Attractions on the trail:

  • Wejherowo Calvary
  • Marszewo Forest Botanical Garden
  • Pelcznica Nature Reserve
  • Kacze Legi Nature Reserve
  • Leg over Swelina Nature Reserve
