In the early Middle Ages, there was a settlement in this place, constituting part of the Slavs’ defensive system. The settlement, located between the lakes combined into one water system, was located on the important trading route from Chełmno to the north to Dzierzgoń, Truso and Santyr. After these lands were conquered by the Teutonic Knights in 1233-35, they were divided between the Order and the Pomesanian Bishopric – the area of Gardeja became part of the Bishop’s dominion. The Gothic-Revival Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ Church, with a rectory, was built in 1928- 1930.
