The most important changes happened after World War II, when Bytów found itself inside the Polish border. The city was rebuilt on the ruins left by the Soviet soldiers, giving it a character different from before the War.
The market in front of St. Catherine’s church became a park with beautiful wooden alleys, which functioned until 2011. It was then that the biggest change to the town centre in its post-World War II history happened.
Since the autumn of 2011 there has been a marketplace in front of St. Catherine’s church, which imitates the pre-War character of the city. It took the shape of a rectangle surrounded by buildings. The south-eastern part of the square is decorated with a fountain, which at night hosts spectacles. The water spurting from the fountain to the rhythm of the music sparkles with a palette of colours and encourages you to stop and admire the Old Town in Bytów. On the opposite side of the square stands a monument of Jesus Christ, who gazes in the direction of St. Catherine’s church. The official name of the marketplace in Bytów is Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński Square.
Bytów town centre gained a lot of charm after the reconstruction of Jana Pawła II Street, which borders on the marketplace. It became a paved boardwalk decorated with stylish benches and street lamps.
