Zajęcze Wzgórze in Sopot

The nature reserve "Zajęcze Wzgórze" (Hare Hill) is located in the Tricity Landscape Park in the forests located within the city limits of Sopot.

It was established in 1983, it covers a fragment of the forest on the slopes of the edge of the moraine plateau, where it protects an impressive old-growth forest in the acidic lowland beech forest community. The oldest trees, pines, oaks and beeches, are 200 years old.

By limiting human interference in the reserve, it is possible to observe the natural process of automatic reconstruction of the tree stand. Old trees die, fall and break, and new generations of trees appear in larger gaps.

  • From the natural point of view, this is the most valuable stage of beech forest development, characterized by the greatest biodiversity – the so-called stand decay phase.
  • A large occurrence of vascular plants was also observed in the reserve, a significant part of which are native species, and 2 of them are protected species.
  • Particularly noteworthy is the presence of Swedish mountain ash (strict protection), which is included in the Polish Red Data Book of Plants. Fruiting bodies of the ragwort moth sometimes grow at the bases of the trunks of some pines from summer to autumn.
  • The natural value of the reserve is also proven by the recently discovered occurrence of extremely rare species of forest insects, whose biology is related to very old and dying trees.
  • The only nature reserve in Sopot is a good place to take a break and take a walk in the bosom of nature. To reach it, follow the green hiking trail – the Skarszewski Trail.
