Just a few steps from the beach lies a place that transports visitors into a different world - the world of old Sopot, full of elegance and bourgeois everyday life from over a century ago. The Sopot Museum is located in a beautiful eclectic villa from the early 20th century, once owned by Gdańsk merchant Ernst August Claaszen.
A House with a Story
The residence was built between 1903 and 1904, designed by Sopot architect Walter Schulz. Today, it’s not only a fine example of early villa architecture but, above all, a space filled with memories – telling the story of everyday life in Sopot’s past.
Right at the start of the visit, guests can watch a short introductory film (approx. 20 minutes) that presents the history of the house and its former owners – an excellent introduction to the tour.
Historic Interiors - a Journey Through Time
The permanent exhibition occupies the ground floor of the villa, where the original interiors from the early 20th century have been carefully reconstructed:
- a living room with an alabaster fireplace, paintings, and period furniture,
- a dining room and veranda reflecting the spirit of the era,
- elegant details such as a mantel clock, an 18th-century wine cooler, and Chippendale-style chairs, which testify to the refined taste and artistic interests of the owner.

Temporary Exhibitions and Educational Activities
On the upper floor, where the Claaszen family’s bedrooms once were, visitors can now explore temporary exhibitions, often dedicated to local history, art, or photography. There’s also an educational room, designed as a creative space for workshops and activities for children.
The veranda, once a leisure spot, was furnished with wicker furniture, adding to the home’s cozy charm.
The Sopot Museum is not just a place to visit – it’s also a living cultural center, offering:
- lectures, talks, and themed meetings,
- community projects and educational workshops,
- initiatives promoting the cultural heritage of Sopot and the region.
Temporary Exhibitions
The Sopot Museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions – learn more on their official website.
The villa is fully accessible for visitors with disabilities, ensuring that everyone can enjoy its exhibitions and historic atmosphere.
