The Wirty dendrological garden was established in the second half of the 19th century. And is the oldest Forest Dendrology Garden in Poland.
Thanks to the cooperation of the local forester Wilhelm Oswin Theodor Puttrich with the German professor Adam Schwappach, various species of trees were brought to Wirty.
The main purpose of the Arboretum was the cultivation of fruit tree seedlings and the study of the economic usefulness of foreign species, particularly conifers. Over the years, the plant collection was expanded. As a result, today, the Arboretum boasts over 830 species and varieties of trees and shrubs from all over the world. It is here that visitors can experience many unforgettable natural encounters.
A must-see!
You absolutely must see the only intermediate walnut tree in Poland, “Wirty,” which is a hybrid of the English walnut and the black walnut. It’s our senior tree, and we’re very proud of it. You should also meet the oldest and largest Greek fir in Poland, which doesn’t like to be forgotten by tourists. Another impressive sight is the tree with two types of leaves: those of a hornbeam and an oak, fluttering in the wind on a common hornbeam of the oak-leaved variety.
The garden covers an area of about 70 hectares and is divided into two parts:
- the forested area
- the park area
In the park section, you can marvel at the variety of tree and shrub species while resting on numerous benches or spreading a blanket on the lawn. In the forested area, you can admire giant arborvitae, Douglas firs, and, by walking further through the tall forest, relax by the shores of Lake Borzechowskie Wielkie.
