Unusual Pomorskie – Kociewie for curious tourists, part 2

The unusual attractions of Kociewie should be discovered without the rush. You can reach many of them by bike or... by kayak. In this small region you will find many treasures worth discovering. Kociewie attractions? Check if you know them all!

A large number of hydrotechnical monuments in Kociewie are related to the nature of this region – these are small hydroelectric power plants and dams, mills, bridges and viaducts. In Konczyce you can visit a historic pumping station. A hydrotechnical node in the form of a lock and pumping station can be seen in the village of Rybaki and in Miedzylez.

In the village of Zur you will see a historic hydroelectric power plant and dam, as well as a railway bridge over the Zur reservoir. A small power plant on the Wierzyca River is located in Owidz, built on the site of a former mill. The Czarnocinskie Piece power plant still operates on the same river.

In the Kociewie towns we can see the remains of old post-industrial buildings, such as the ruins of mills that once belonged to Franz Wiechert in Starogard Gdanski, or the ruins of a Dutch windmill in Nowe.

An interesting object is the buildings of the former manor-grange complex with a water tower and a former distillery in Boleslawowo, which currently belong to the Agricultural School Complex.

Sacral architecture

Kociewie sacral monuments include not only monumental cathedrals, but also a large number of small, charming churches and chapels. Many of them are valuable monuments, with their own unique features for the region. When traveling through the Kociewie villages, it is worth stopping by them and learning about their history.

In Pogodki, a charming village on the Wierzyca River, there are two churches in close proximity: a baroque Catholic one and the ruins of a neo-Gothic evangelical church. The baroque temple houses post-Cistercian furnishings inside, including: altar, baptismal font and pulpit.

In Kokoszkowy there is an interesting Gothic church – with a wooden tower and a base built of stone rarely used in Pomorskie. Inside there are valuable medieval polychromes on the walls of the presbytery.

The only completely wooden church in Kociewie is the one in Szczodrowo. It is one of the oldest wooden churches in Pomorskie, dating from the turn of the XVth and XVIth centuries. It has a simple architectural form, a valuable Baroque altar, and a Gothic stone baptismal font.

Gorzedziej is one of the oldest castles in Pomorskie. Today it is a village, in the past it was a town. There is a Gothic church from the XIVth century here, which was built on the site of an earlier temple, associated with St. Adalbert, who travelled this way to Prussia. Currently, the order of Discalced Carmelites runs a retreat house here.

When visiting Starogard Gdanski, it is worth paying attention to the building of the former synagogue.
