In 1995, the Gallery was transformed into the Department of Photography of the Gdańsk National Museum and remains Poland’s only venue promoting photography under the supervision of a national museum.
The Gallery gathers and stores museum collections with great significance to the city and region, which are used by historians, monument conservers, the media and as court evidence. A separate group, which is continuously being expanded, is the photography of the borderlands. The gallery annually prepares 6-10 temporary artistic, historical or problematic exhibitions, which are also presented outside its premises.
