The Sopot Hippodrome is one of Europe’s most unique equestrian venues - located just a short walk from the Baltic Sea. It is not only a racing track, but also a recreational and educational center where visitors can experience the beauty of horses in motion against a seaside backdrop. Perfect for sports lovers, families, and anyone seeking unforgettable moments in nature.
History
The history of the Sopot Hippodrome dates back to the 1870s, when Prussian hussars stationed in Gdańsk organized hunting races in the area. By the late 19th century, formal horse races were held regularly, and the track quickly became a popular attraction. Its golden era came during the Free City of Danzig period, when easy rail access and the seaside location drew large crowds.
After World War II, racing resumed, but in the 1980s the venue was converted into a training center. It wasn’t until the late 1990s, when the Hippodrome came under municipal management, that racing returned. The nearby construction of the Ergo Arena further boosted its sporting prestige.
The Hippodrome Today
Today, the Sopot Hippodrome is a modern multifunctional center hosting:
- horse races,
- international show jumping and dressage competitions,
- riding schools for children and adults,
- therapeutic riding (hippotherapy).
The complex also includes a horse hotel, carriage rentals and recreational areas open all year round.
