The Beka Nature Reserve covers 350 hectares of salt meadows stretching between the villages of Osłonino and Rewa.
Location
This low-lying coastal area, in some places even below sea level, is an extremely rare and valuable habitat for halophytes – plants that thrive in salty environments. Many species of these salt-loving plants grow here, including those threatened with extinction and listed in the Polish Red Book of Plants, such as Juncus gerardii (saltmarsh rush) and Plantago maritima (sea plantain).
The vast meadows of the reserve provide excellent living conditions for wetland and water birds. Many protected and rare species nest here, while in spring and autumn, Beka becomes an important resting and feeding site for migratory birds. Apart from the islets of the Świna River delta, there is hardly any other place in Poland – or even in Europe – that gathers such a unique combination of flora and fauna.
A path paved with concrete slabs runs along the reserve (closed to car traffic), lined with educational boards. A small bridge at the mouth of the Rewa Stream, where it flows into Puck Bay, is a favorite resting spot for cyclists and hikers.
A Walk through the Reserve
You can walk along the Beka educational trail between August 1st and the end of February. During the rest of the year, access to the reserve is prohibited, as this is the bird nesting season. However, you can still observe the birds from many points along the reserve’s border, especially if you have binoculars.
The walk can begin at a small viewing tower, from where you follow the Mrzezino Canal towards a narrow beach. Using one of the many small bridges, you can cross the canal and continue along a designated trail leading to the site of the former fishing settlement of Beka, from which the reserve takes its name.
This part of the walk leads through open coastal terrain, rich in low-growing maritime vegetation. It’s worth looking down to identify various halophytes (salt-tolerant plants) and psammophytes (sand-loving species). From the bridges, you can admire panoramic views of Puck Bay with the Hel Peninsula in the background, the Puck Upland, and the vast Mokre Błota wetlands, rising gradually toward the moraine hills of the Tricity Landscape Park – a truly 365° spectacular view.
From the cross marking the site of the old settlement, a narrow path follows another canal, leading along the reserve boundary through tall reeds and wetland vegetation.
Practical Tips
Movement within Beka is allowed only on foot. It’s a good idea to bring rubber boots, as even on hot days some parts of the trail may be covered with a few centimeters of water. A pair of binoculars and a camera will come in handy at any time of the year.
Spacer po rezerwacie
Na spacer ścieżką dydaktyczną Beki można się wybrać w okresie od 1 sierpnia do końca lutego. W pozostałych miesiącach, ze względu na gniazdujące wtedy ptaki, wstęp do rezerwatu jest zabroniony. Można je jednak podglądać z wielu miejsc na granicy rezerwatu, zwłaszcza jeśli ma się pod ręką lornetkę.
Spacer można rozpocząć przy niewielkiej wieży widokowej, aby potem wzdłuż Kanału Mrzezino dotrzeć do wąskiej plaży, jednym z wielu mostków w rezerwacie przejść na drugi brzeg kanału i powędrować wyznaczonym szlakiem aż do miejsca, gdzie kiedyś znajdowała się osada rybacka Beka, od której nazwę otrzymał rezerwat. Ta część spaceru prowadzi po otwartym terenie, z obfitością niskopiennej nadmorskiej flory, warto patrzeć pod nogi i próbować rozpoznać rozmaite słonorośla czy psamofity (piaskoluby). Z kolejnych mostków rozpościera się panorama Zatoki Puckiej z Półwyspem Helskim w tle, dalej wysoczyzna Kępy Puckiej, i rozległe Moście Błota, za którymi piętrzą się morenowe wzniesienia Trójmiejskiego Parku Krajobrazowego. 365” fantastycznego widoku.
Od krzyża znaczącego miejsce dawnej osady, wąska ścieżka prowadzi do granicy rezerwatu wzdłuż kolejnego kanału, wśród wysokich szuwarów, roślinności wodnej i błotnej.
Po Bece wolno się poruszać wyłącznie pieszo. Warto zabrać ze sobą kalosze, nawet w upalne dni niektóre fragmenty trasy mogą znajdować się pod kilkucentymetrową warstwą wody. Lornetka i aparat fotograficzny przydadzą się o każdej porze roku.
