St. Mary’s Gate (Brama Mariacka) in Gdańsk

St. Mary’s Gate (Brama Mariacka) in Gdańsk

This late-Gothic water gate was probably built in the last quarter of the 15th Century, at the end of Mariacka Street.

It has a rectangular shape. On the ground floor, there is a passage with the following coats of arms above it: from the direction of Motława there is the Republic of Poland coat of arms, with the coats of arms of Gdańsk and Royal Prussia "bowing" to it on its sides (the so-called heraldic bow), and, facing Mariacka Street, the coats of arms of Gdańsk, held by two lions. It is one of the first representations of this type.

The eastern façade are divided with blind windows ending with double ogives and embraced with octagonal towers. The entire building is covered with a pitched roof with a ridge perpendicular to the Motława.
