Czersk… in the heart of the forests

In the city centre there is a Ostrowski Square with the famous Trout Fountain. There are many shops, cafes and restaurants around. Beautiful small city space often awarded during different competitions. Ostrowski square is the place where many cultural events take place. There is also the City Hall and tourists information, bus station, train station, police department and many shopping facilities.

The symbol of the city is neogothic church of St Magdalene – with a very  interesting construction and rich interior, build with a project of Oskar Hossfeld on the Latin cross shape, three isle church with a high 40 m tower and 4 bell. The most precious piece of art here is the late Renesas main altar with the Hermann Hann painting form 1611 and the Roman stone baptismal font from XIII and XV century.

Resting with the kids it is worth visiting parks in Czersk – Kociewksi, Borowiacki and Kashubian. The park avenues are excellent for walk.

Borowiacki Park

Borowiacki Park: near Tysiaclecia Avenue is the place full of energy. There is a modern skatepark, big playground and a new sport facility as well as the walking paths and a big green area ideal for resting, walking or picnicking. Excellent place for runners. This park in in the city centre. Near the park there is a modern city stadion with a tennis court and multifunction football pitch.

Kociewski Park

Kociewski Park: near Lutego 21 Street is an ideal place for those who appreciate silence, peace and nature. It is here where You can walk around old over 100 years trees and listen to the waters of Czerski Stream. Children will not be bored here either – there is a colourful play ground there too. The park is situated at the city borders that is why there is a comfortable parking there as well.

Odry

A village situated at the Wda River, 13 kilometres from Czersk. Worth visiting is neoclassical church in Odry, built between 1931 – 1933 with a high tower. Inside there is a gothic (1420 – 1430 ) Resurrected Christ  sculpture, a baroque box from 1686, 4 baroque candlesticks from XVIII and the blue embroidered  vestment from XVIII with flower motive.

Thinking about the tourists interested in a history and nature fans there is a museum in Odry, which is a part of Historical – Entographical  Musuem in Chojnice, showing the interesting artefacts found during the archaeological excavations done in the “Stone Rings” Reserve.

Face to face with nature, nature attractions:

There is an educational path with a forest – nature hut in Forest Office in Czersk, close to the forest office building at the Czersk – Chojnice road. Those are the object usually shown to the school groups but available for anybody who wants come here while walking around in the Sunday afternoon and rest from the city sounds.

Suszek – a nature reserve. Close to Rytel (around 3.5 km) there is a Nature Station of Łodz University. It is a research field, with  educational stations with signed boards opened to anybody.

“Mętne” – a nature reserve with a Mętne Lake and the nearby swamps. There are many plants typical for the peatbogs as well as areas with the little birch trees, for which this reserve was made for. There are many interesting examples of flora and fauna such as: Drosera Rotundifolia, regular swamp, Carex Limosa, a patterned snake, a grass snake. The reserve is also a crane rest area.

“ Ustronie” – a forest reserve, 6 kilometres from Czersk. There a  part of a mixed forest under protection with beach, oak, pine, birch and hornbeam trees.

“Yew-trees at the Czersk Stream”  – it protects the unique yew-trees form XIX century. The most interesting part is the one with different kinds of trees, multi-layer if yew-trees is protected by the fence, where You can walk only along the shown paths. From the West the reserve is neighbouring with the  meadows of the Czersk Stream. 0.5 kilometres further there is Świdno Lake.

“Stone Rings” Reserve is a Goths cemetery, who settled in Odry around 70/80 A.D. There are 10 full and 2 pieces of the stone rings. The smallest is 15 metres wide and the biggest is 33 metres wide. At the rings sides there are bigger stones situated from 20 up to 70 metres high. There are between 16 up to 29 of them. Along with the stone rings in the reserve there are also around  30 sand hills between 8 to 12 metres wide.

Under the rings there were holes discovered with the bones and ash urns. It is a very interesting place when nature is concerned, especially the number of different stone mosses several thousand years old. They are a kind of witnesses of former times and a very good science research materials. The stone rings in Odry is a very interesting nature and archaeological place, one of its kind in Europe and the biggest in Poland.
